Lucky for music fans Ben Folds seems to really love St. Louis. First, he plays here at least once and sometimes twice a year. Second, his 2009 release Ben Folds Presents: University A Capella featured not one, but two tracks from students at Washington University.
Last Tuesday, Folds released the video for the A Capella version of the song "A Working Day" from his 2010 album Lonely Avenue, a collaboration with author Nick Hornby. In January 2011 on tour with the new album, Folds arranged to record seven audiences across the US Midwest separately performing specific parts of the song. The video, produced by bassist Ryan Lerman, contains an arrangement later weaved together to create the 14,000 voice choir heard below. Read the 3 Minute Recordreview for more details of this show that rolled through the Pageant earlier this year. Further, you can read a recent interview with Folds by the Huffington Post and watch the video below.

However, Folds isn't quite done with St. Louis this year. He returns to the Gateway City on Sunday, November 6 to play his début with the talented Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra on their home turf at Powell Symphony Hall. Orchestral arrangements of Folds work with Ben Folds Five and his solo material add depth and texture to his engaging pop music. Tickets for Ben Folds are on sale now at the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra website or here.
With beautiful acoustics Powell Symphony Hall opened in 1925 as the St. Louis Theatre as a opulant movie house and vaudeville stage. Designed by Chicago-based architectural firm Rapp & Rapp, the hall shares a lineage with other famous theatres designed by the firm including the Chicago Theatre, the Paramount Theatre in New York and the defunct Ambassador Theatre in St. Louis. When the flickering images stopped in 1966, the orchestra first renovated and later moved to the space in 1968 after vacating their longtime home at the Kiel Opera House.
