Currently on a tour of the Midwest, John Doe and Jill Sobule bring their new collaboration, Jill 'n John to the stage at Off Broadway Friday night for an early show that you won't want to miss.
Doe, an original member of seminal punk rock band X, has made a successful solo career over the past 20 years playing Americana or country music more closely associated with his '80's side project, The Knitters. While Sobule first burst onto the music scene in 1995 with her hit "I Kissed A Girl" and has continued to record albums even making headlines by funding an entire album with fan support. Independently, both Doe and Sobule have released 8 solo albums to date.
Their first recorded collaboration, A Day at the Pass, captures an ongoing partnership between Sobule & Doe. Similar to Sobule's model in 2009, the album funding for the record came entirely from their fans. Doe and Sobule recorded live with an all-star band at The Pass studio on one fine day in Los Angeles.
The record contains new original songs as well as a cover of Sobule singing lead on "Never My Love," a 1967 hit for The Association. Meanwhile, Doe pays tribute to the late Alex Chilton on the classic Big Star track that closed Radio City, "I'm In Love With A Girl." The duo even re-recorded a new version of the song that shot Sobule onto the charts 16 years ago, "I Kissed A Girl," with Doe adding background vocals.
The album, now available as a digital download, is currently streaming at John Doe's website in its entirety. A CD version of the record featuring 2 extra bonus tracks will be sold exclusively as part of Record Store Day beginning April 16th. Speaking of Record Store Day, the duo will play the 11 a.m. opening slot at Euclid Records on Saturday morning then head to their next gig in Kansas City.
