On Saturday, July 21, the BoDeans will bring their unique blend of rock to the stage at the Old Rock House. Even though the show is five months off, tickets go on sale tomorrow at Noon. The cost is $20 in advance and $22 the day of show.
Natives of Waukesha, WI, the BoDeans hit the scene in 1986 with a roots rock sound on their T-Bone Burnett produced album, "Love & Home & Sex & Dreams," and Rolling Stone named the band The band began a rise which saw the release of five albums in the next 10 years: Outside Looking In (1987), Home (1989), Black and White (1991), and Go Slow Down (1993). Two years after the release of Go Slow Down the producers of the television show Party of Five tabbed their song "Closer to Free," which netted the band their biggest hit.
The band went on hiatus in the late '90s so founding members Sam Llanas and Kurt Neumann could record solo albums, but the two ultimately reconvened the band to release 2004's Resolution. They reunited with T-Bone Burnett in 2008 for Still, a return to their rootsy sound, and then in 2010 Mr. Sad Clown followed. Their latest album from last year, Indigo Dreams, is "a salute to the working man – his dreams, his desires, his love, his responsibilities, his ethos."
However, in the summer of 2011, a couple of weeks after the release of their latest album, Sam Llanas failed to show up to a show in Colorado and officially left the band later that week due to what Neumann called "differences of opinion" that had been "going on for years."
Seemingly refreshed with the edition of Jake Owen into the mix, Neumann continues to keep the band going with the same spirit as before with a renewed sense of urgency.
This is a band I have a lot of history with over the years. They have the honor of being the first show I ever saw at Mississippi Nights. Among other places, I've also seen them at Fair St. Louis, the Illinois State Fair, and the American Theatre (now Roberts Orpheum). The energy of those shows kept me coming back time and again. I trust that you will get this sense by watching the videos below. Enjoy!
