While most bands from Nashville attempt to work the time-honored and regimented country music system, SHIROCK decided to take a different route. With the convertible top down and wind blowing through their hair, their rock/pop sound charts their own direction firmly in the middle of the modern rock & roll genre.
SHIROCK will release their album Everything Burns on Tuesday, February 22 via The Movement Group, a new label singers Chuck and Pap Shirock founded recently with their manager. This is actually a re-release of their album from 2009 complete with a deluxe status. The original 12 song album gets expanded to 20 tracks including eight new or unreleased songs. This deluxe edition also contains the SHIROCKumentary and the music video for the debut single “New Solution”.The band released the single for the song on January 25 including the single version, LP version and a dance remix produced by KCORIHS.
SHIROCK is (L-R): Kevin Whitsett – bass, Chuck Shirock - lead vocals, guitar, Evan Weatherford - lead guitar, Pap Shirock - lead vocals, keys and Adam Gatchel – drums.
Dropped on January 25, the first single from the record, "New Solution", gets the blood flowing with the full-on Rock treatment complete with drum intro and "Vertigo" (U2) style guitar riff that grabs you and pulls you in. By the time the chorus hits, with its strong backing harmonies from Pap Shirock, the track has you rolling the windows down and cranking the car stereo singing at the top of your lungs.
While the music contained here is firmly in the arena rock spectrum, the full production by Jay Ruston (The Donnas, Everclear, Matisyahu, and Cold War Kids) contains a solid Nashville quality that's sonically familiar to most new country music listeners who enjoy the crossover sound of country artists such as Rascal Flatts, Sugarland and Lady Antebellum. Yet, fans of work of rock bands like Muse, The Killers, 30 Seconds To Mars and even later era U2 will find the sound easily recognizable.
The music bears listening on its own merits, but upon the first few listens much of the album feels like it belongs squarely set as music behind a television show or movie. This is not a jab at the album, but a compliment to its anthemic quality of songwriting and production. The third track, "Still Young" embodies that vibe more than any other on the album. Chuck Shirock sings, "I want to fight you/and I want to lose/all I see is hurt behind your eyes/we started over." Filled with relationship metaphors of walking over flames, walking in the summer rain and asking for a second chance, the song is ripe for a soundtrack inclusion. No matter how you take that assessment, I'm positive the band would love receiving that royalty check in the mail.
‘Still Young’ is a song about trying to find hope when all we felt was doubt and uncertainty - it’s about feeling overwhelmed by the pressures of big ideas and passing time, but realizing that as long as we are alive there is still a chance to make a difference.” - Chuck Shirock
While Chuck Shirock is clearly the spiritual leader and chief songwriter his partner has the potential of carrying an album of her own. Keyboardist/Vocalist Pap Shirock adds soaring harmonies and backing vocals while singing lead vocals on two tracks on the main album -- "I'll Take Rain" and "Silver".
On top of extensive traditional touring the band has sought to cultivate younger fans by bringing their music to over 100 high schools in the past few years. The band's website reveals much about their promotional machine: the band has a clothing line, a deal with Delta Airlines for the single to be played on domestic flights, and a non-profit organization with a commitment to getting kids to help strengthen their communities. Chuck Shirock states, “Historically, young people ignite cultural revolutions. We want to meet our fans as soon as we can in their life journey, and be the soundtrack for them as they seek to impact the world around them.”
