Cheap Trick On Austin City Limits
KETC, the St. Louis PBS affiliate, will air the taped performance of Austin City Limits featuring Cheap Trick tonight at 10 p.m. The sixty minute program features the Rockford,IL natives playing songs from their most recent album entitled The Latest and classic favorites from their back catalog like “I Want You to Want Me,” “Surrender,” and “Dream Police.” The performance marks the iconic band’s first appearance on the show, and it premiered on PBS stations nationwide on January 1, 2011.
The performance debuted on many PBS stations in the U.S. on January 1st, but KETC is not airing the performance until today. PBS affiliates have the ability to air programs when it fits into their schedules.
Their 2009 release, The Latest, the group's strongest album in years, demonstrated that Cheap Trick still knows how to craft a great Power Pop/Rock 'n Roll album after forming in the early 1970's. “Moving confidently into the future while remaining convincingly rooted in the past? Now that’s a neat trick,” said The New Yorker when reviewing the album.
“Cheap Trick is timeless!’ exclaimed series executive producer Terry Lickona. “Actually, the band started at almost exactly the same time as Austin City Limits, so after 36 years it’s about time they finally hit our stage. And they are still at the top of their game!”
In addition to the release of The Latest, Cheap Trick has recently written and performed the theme song to Comedy Central’s The Colbert Report. In its wildly successful history, the band has performed more than 5,000 concerts and has sold more than 20 million records worldwide.
Season 36 celebrates an exciting time in the history of Austin City Limits, as the show tapes its last season in its original studio, Studio 6A. The studio, designated last year as a historic rock and roll landmark by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum, has hosted hundreds of classic performances over the years. In early 2011, the show will move to its new home in the heart of downtown Austin at ACL Live the Moody Theater, a full-time music venue and state of the art production facility.
