NPR Premiering New Song From R.E.M.
On December 15th, R.E.M. announced the March 8th, 2011 release date and track listing for their new album Collapse Into Now. Today, NPR music has a premier of the third new song to leak from the new album,"Oh My Heart", on the All Songs Considered blog. NPR Music asked Michael Stipe to share a bit about this new song, and here's what he has to say:
"It's a very quiet and very meditative song dedicated to New Orleans — about New Orleans. Jacknife [Lee] is great as a producer, because he saw that we were struggling with what is a very quiet song. We were standing really far away from each other in the room, and it was hard not only to actually physically hear each other, but it felt dispersed. He brought us into the middle, and instantly, of course, the song worked."
The band's 15th studio album, a follow up to 2008's Accelerate, includes guests Joel Gibb, Lenny Kaye, Peaches, Patti Smith and Eddie Vedder. The band released a video with lyrics for the lead track "Discoverer" on that December 15th announcement date. The next week the band announced that those who preorder the new album will immedately receive a free download of the album track "It Happened Today" featuring Eddie Vedder and Joel Gibb on vocals. If you look hard enough around You Tube you can probably hear another track or two, but the band provides snippets from the songs in this Official Trailer for Collapse Into Now:
